Splinters and Foreign Objects: What to Remove, What to Leave
A shallow splinter can come out with sterile tweezers. Almost everything else, anything embedded, anything in an ear or nose, stays where it is until a professional removes it.
The simple rule
- 1
Splinter you can reach? Sterile tweezers.
If it is deeply embedded, leave it and send them for further medical attention.
- 2
Glass or anything embedded in a wound? Leave it.
Pad around it as covered in bleeding and wounds, and get them to hospital.
- 3
Something in an ear or nose? Do not attempt removal.
You risk embedding it further or causing damage. Medical attention instead.
- 4
Swallowed objects.
Many pass through naturally. Unsure? Call 111. Glass or anything that could harm internal organs: A&E, straight away.
Common questions
Should you remove something stuck in someone's ear or nose?
No. You can push it deeper or cause damage. Keep them calm and get medical attention to remove it.
What should you do if someone swallows something sharp?
Anything like glass or an object that could damage internal organs means going to A&E immediately. For low-risk objects that will probably pass naturally, call 111 for advice if unsure.
